Description
Active Ingredient: Each 5mL of the oral suspension contains 100mg of Doxycycline Hydrochloride. The medication is also available in 100mg tablet form.
Action: Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, effectively stopping the growth of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Indications: Veterinarians prescribe LC-DOX for various conditions:
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., kennel cough)
Intestinal and urogenital tract infections
Tick-borne diseases, particularly Ehrlichiosis
Can also be used as part of heartworm treatment to kill associated Wolbachia bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
This is a prescription medication and should only be used as directed by a veterinarian. Do not adjust dosage without professional guidance.
Suspension Dosage for Dogs & Cats:
0.25 mL per kg of body weight every 12 hours.
OR 0.5 mL per kg of body weight every 24 hours.
Treatment typically lasts for 5-7 days, but can be longer (e.g., 30 days for chronic infections) as prescribed by a vet.
Tablet Dosage for Dogs & Cats:
One (1) tablet per 10 kg of body weight for 5-7 days or as prescribed by a veterinarian.
Administration Notes: The liquid suspension can be administered directly into the mouth or mixed with food. The tablets can be given whole or crushed and mixed with food. Giving with food can help prevent stomach upset.
Important Contraindications and Side Effects
Contraindicated in:
The last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy in pregnant dogs and cats.
Puppies and kittens less than 4 weeks old (due to potential tooth discoloration and skeletal effects).
Pets with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Common Side Effects: The most common side effects are gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. In rare cases, photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight) can occur.
